When the tide covers the pools again

Eight games in a browser tab
for when the fog rolls over the cove

Once the sea creeps back over the rock pools and the boardwalk turns slick with rain, Ochie settles into the research hut with a laptop instead of a hand lens. The eight free games on the hut list run from a quiet valley village and a busy hospital to egg-shaped shooters, a basketball front office and kingdoms on a shared map. Each of them loads in a plain browser tab, and starting is free.

What the eight cost: nothing to start, and each has an optional in-game shop.

01

Free from the first tap

All eight cost nothing to start, and you can stay with any of them for months; the quests, matches, wards, villages and campaigns are all part of the free version.

Studios do offer paid extras, usually premium currency, cosmetic looks or ways to hurry a timer. Lots of players never buy a thing, and a household sharing one laptop can usually block purchases in each studio's account settings.

02

Setting out on day one

Tap a game's button and its own website opens in a fresh tab. Expect a quick sign-up with most of them before a village, team or hero is created for you.

Nearly every game starts with a tutorial. Stick with it until it finishes; it explains the controls and resources quicker than wandering about alone.

03

Games that keep working while you beachcomb

Sunrise Village, Kapi Hospital, Uptasia and the strategy maps keep moving while you are away: crops grow, patients wait, factories run and armies march. Checking in once at breakfast and again after supper tends to be plenty.

Shell Shockers works the other way round, since every match is live and over in minutes. Save it for a short gap in the day, and leave longer evenings to the slow planners.

04

Keep your sign-ins as safe as a sea star in a deep pool

Logins belong to each studio, so enter your details only on the game's genuine address. Pick a separate password per game, and enable two-step verification whenever a studio supports it.

No genuine support team will ever need your password. Messages offering free premium currency for your password are after your account, so delete them.

How Ochie chose these eight

  • Ochie only kept games that load in a regular desktop browser window, so the first quest, match or harvest is a click away.
  • Joining is free, and players who skip the shop still get the whole core game.
  • The list stretches from quick, silly rounds to slow plans that unfold over weeks, so a short rainy break and a long stormy evening are both covered.
  • The studios behind them still run and update their games, so there are other players around and fresh things to do.

No. All eight play in a desktop browser. Sunrise Village, Travian Kingdoms, BuzzerBeater and Iron Order 1919 each have a mobile app as an extra; Shell Shockers, Kapi Hospital, Kingdom of Loathing and Uptasia are played in the browser.

No. Starting costs nothing, and even a player who never spends a cent sees the heart of each game; buying extras is entirely up to you.

No. Ochie only spotted them; separate studios design and host every game, and each button here just sends you to the studio's own site.

No. Each studio keeps its own login, so you sign up separately wherever a game asks for it.

Sunrise Village, Kapi Hospital, Uptasia, Travian Kingdoms and Iron Order 1919 carry on while you are away. Shell Shockers only runs while you are in a match.

Sunrise Village, with its quiet valley, or Uptasia if you like a picture puzzle between building jobs. Shell Shockers is the quickest and noisiest of the eight.

Yes. Shell Shockers has live matches, Travian Kingdoms and Iron Order 1919 are built around alliances and coalitions, and BuzzerBeater puts you in leagues with other managers.
